BELLEFONTE PROGRAM RECIEVES UTO GRANT

United Thank Offering awarded a $10,000 UTO Grant to the Mending Hearts Ministry Inc. of Bellefonte. The grant helped fund the start-up costs to launch a Christian program serving women who have experienced the trauma of sexual abuse. The program is directed by Kathy Hudson, with the assistance of the Rev. Daniel Selvage, Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Through Bible study, prayer and fellowship, women come together to explore their spirituality in a safe, non-threatening environment. The curriculum of this ministry was written by the founder with the help of several clergy. It focuses on several themes dealing with sexual abuse. Research has found no other program of its kind in any major religious denomination. Commenting on the award, Bishop Creighton noted, “Mending Hearts is absolutely consistent with “Growing in service”, which is one of our diocesan aims.”

Grants such as this are the result of your participation in the United Thank Offering Blue Box ministry! It is a wonderful devotional opportunity. The next suggested UTO Parish Ingathering Date for Fall 2005 is Sunday, September 25. For more information, see your local UTO Parish Coordinator or contact Wilma F. Johnson, 39 Nichols St., Wellsboro, PA 16901, 570-742-2811, e-mail: wjohnson7@chilitech.net.

The Elizabeth S. Bonham Mission Fund of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist, York, Pennsylvania provided a grant of start up funds for Mending Hearts. Their generous support enabled the ministry to move forward and be built on a sure and strong foundation.

The American Bible Society and the Maryland Bible Society made a generous donation of Bibles and other materials, to be used as handouts during the program. These donations will enable many women who participate in Mending Hearts to have their own Bibles, many for the first time.
